On Feb. 17, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Y. Ausby granted bail for a Baltimore man facing attempted murder charges.

Judge Ausby granted Juan Dean bail on Friday, releasing him on 24-hour home detention. The defendant was prohibited from making any direct or indirect contact with the victim or the victim’s family.

Dean, 41, is charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, having a handgun on his person, having a handgun in a vehicle, and discharging firearms in connection with an incident that happened on June 25, 2022.

According to court documents, on the day of the incident, officers were called to the 1800 block of Chilton Street for reports of an aggravated assault. On arrival, officers spoke with the victim, who informed him that he was just shot by his neighbor, later identified as the defendant.

It was revealed throughout the investigation that the victim got into a dispute with the defendant over food being accidentally delivered to the victim’s house.

Defense counsel Charles Paul stressed to the court that this case is an “alleged shooting,” as there were no shell casings or weapons recovered.

Paul recommended his client be released on home detention, noting that his client will stay with a friend.

In her rebuttal, the prosecutor said the 2022 incident was unprovoked and recommended no bail for the defendant. She believed the defendant was a public safety threat and danger to the community, noting that the defendant had a prior homicide conviction from 1999.
