BPD Releases Video of Fatal Police-Involved Shooting

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) released video footage from the May 24 shooting that occurred on the 3400 block of South Hanover Street.

Officers were patrolling in the area when they identified a person of interest and approached the male to question him. During the interview, the man stood up and pointed a gun at officers. Officers gave several verbal commands to drop the gun, but he did not comply. An exchange of gunfire took place, during which the man and one officer were struck. Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment. The man, later identified as 39-year-old Anthony Ferguson, was pronounced deceased a short time later. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The officers involved were:

Sergeant Timothy Copeland, an 18-year veteran
Detective Nicholas Wellems, a 10-year veteran
Officer Brandall Mable, a six-year veteran
Officer Nicolas Sturla, a four-year veteran
Officer Kevin Retamales, a three-year veteran

All officers are assigned to the Southern District. They remain on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

The investigation is being conducted by the Independent Investigations Division of the Attorney General’s Office and BPD’s Special Investigative Response Team (SIRT).
