A 28-year-old attempted homicide defendant accused of strangling and then shooting at his ex-girlfriend accepted a plea of four years with five years probation on April 1 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Cynthia H. Jones.
According to the prosecution, on Feb. 19, 2021, Kamal Stewart and his ex-girlfriend allegedly had a dispute when the defendant began strangling her to the point her vision became blurry. When the victim got into a vehicle, Stewart allegedly fired multiple shots at her, shattering the vehicle’s glass windows.
During reception court on Friday, Judge Jones listened as the prosecutor presented a plea of 15 years, suspending all but four years, with five years probation for attempted first-degree murder and having a loaded handgun on his person.
Under the plea, the defendant must stay away from the victim and register as a gun offender.
Stewart and his defense attorney, Dalia Weintraub, accepted the plea offer.
Stewart was initially charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, two counts of use of a deadly weapon with the intent to injure, having a handgun on his person, having a loaded handgun on his person, having a handgun in a vehicle on a public road, having a loaded handgun in a vehicle, discharging firearms, malicious destruction of property value greater than $1000, and malicious destruction of property value less than $1000.
