On Jan. 17, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland was unable to set a trial date for a 38-year-old homicide defendant.
Kenneth Mackay is charged with first-degree murder and having a deadly weapon with the intent to injure for the murder of 38-year-old Daniel Taylor.
Mackay, represented by stand-in defense attorney Sherri Scott, rejected a plea offer of life, suspending all but 60 years, and five years of supervised probation for first-degree murder.
James Sweeting III, Mackay’s defense attorney, was unable to attend today’s hearing due to trying another case in D.C. Counsel did not have a viable trial date to present to the court, as Sweeting’s only availability for a four-day trial was in July. Judge Copeland said that the docket for May was not yet open, let alone June or July.
Judge Copeland continued the hearing until Jan. 19, when Sweeting will appear to discuss his availability with the court.
According to a Baltimore Police Department press release, Mackay allegedly killed Taylor on the 1800 block of Presbury Street on Sept. 7, 2023.
