Bad Weather Postpones Jury Selection in Domestic Shooting Case

Jury selection was halted on March 16 for the case of 40-year-old Oba-Cinque Mitchiner, who is accused of shooting his domestic partner in the back as she drove through a Southeast Baltimore neighborhood last May.

Mitchiner is being tried before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Dana Michele Middleton on charges of attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment, as well as six firearm violations in connection with the shooting.

Proceedings opened with the court questioning a pool of prospective jurors, though severe weather conditions led to a postponement until the following day.

Mitchiner is charged in an incident which occurred on May 4, 2025, on the 4000 block of Belwood Avenue. According to court documents, Southeast District officers were notified of the shooting shortly before 2 a.m. after the victim arrived at Johns Hopkins Hospital with a gunshot wound to her back.

Investigators say the victim was driving through the residential block when she was shot. She was rushed into surgery and intubated, leaving her unable to speak with the police immediately following the attack.

A witness later identified Mitchiner as the allegedc gunman. Further investigation revealed that Mitchiner and the victim were in an ongoing relationship and lived together at the time of the shooting.

The trial is expected to continue on March 17 once a full panel of jurors is seated.
