Alibi Clears Defendant in 1 of 2 Shootings

During a second bail review proceeding, defense counsel for attempted homicide defendant Latoya Hicks verified her client’s alibi in a January shooting during a bail review on April 22, but the defendant was denied bail in connection to another shooting at the same residence about two weeks later.

Defense attorney Andrea Jaskulsky told Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie J. Hong that Hicks was receiving in-patient treatment at Sheppard Pratt Hospital at the time of the Jan. 23, shooting on the 4700 block of Wakefield Road. According to the prosecution, Hicks allegedly shot at a man in January, but the victim informed the court that someone else shot at him.

On Friday, Jaskulsky provided the court with documentation from the hospital that proved that Hicks was receiving treatment at the time of the shooting.

However, Hicks is also accused of another shooting on Feb. 9, when she and the same man, who was staying at the residence, got into an argument. Video surveillance footage showed the victim hiding behind a car as Hicks threw clothes off a balcony when a gun went off.

Jaskulsky said the firearm, which belonged to Hicks, accidentally went off while she was throwing the clothes.

Given the seriousness of the allegations, Judge Hong denied bail.

Hicks’ next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 18 in reception court.
