Tamal Johnson, 23, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and other firearm-related charges on Sept. 28, just hours after his trial concluded.
Johnson was accused of fatally shooting Taniya Gray, 23, on May 11, 2025.
Surveillance footage shown during the trial depicted the shooter waiting outside Gray’s home in a Kia Sorento parked near the 4100 block of Mountwood Road and Stokes Road for six hours before the shooting. License plate readings from the vehicle connected it to a previous traffic stop in which Johnson’s mother was identified as the driver. His mother testified that Johnson borrowed the vehicle the night before the shooting and returned it the following morning.
Gray’s friend, who was present during the shooting, testified that Gray had just exited the home when she saw someone run toward her car with a large gun. Her vehicle was blocked in by the Sorento, forcing her to flee on foot. She initially believed Gray was running behind her, but Gray was fatally shot during the incident.
The friend ran to a nearby neighbor’s home to call police and returned with officers when they arrived.
In addition to the friend’s testimony, the prosecution called an FBI special agent with the Cellular Analysis Survey Team (CAST), who testified about the whereabouts of Johnson’s phone activity on May 11. He said the phone’s movement placed it in the general area of the crime scene and, approximately six hours later, in the general area of the residence where Johnson was arrested.
Jurors deliberated for only a short time following closing arguments before returning a guilty verdict on all charges.
A sentencing date has not yet been set.
