Defendant Genesis Collins Jr. appeared in mental health court for a status conference in front of Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin on Sept. 6.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Collins pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his mother, Audrey Collins, in 2013, and was brought to mental health court in 2019.
According to attorney Sharon Bogins Eberhart, Collins will complete his five year probation and mental health treatment program in January 2024. Since the start of his program and probation, Collins has made immense progress. He has been working five days a week, and spends the majority of his downtime helping his 92-year-old father, said Eberhart.
Judge Rasin and Bogins said Collins has been nothing but fully compliant throughout the course of his treatment. They say that he is dedicated to his treatment program, has been seeing his therapist regularly, and receives necessary injections.
“He continuously does great … he is a star of the program,” said Bogins.
In response, Collins displayed extreme gratitude and wanted to thank everyone involved for keeping him on the right track. Judge E. Rasin replied by telling Collins that on behalf of everyone involved, “You inspire us.”
The Baltimore Sun further explained that on the morning of March 5, 2011, Collins vocalized to his mother that he wanted to kill himself due to the sum of money he owed to drug dealers. Following, Collins poured rubbing alcohol on his head and proceeded to set himself on fire with a lighter. He then jumped on top of his mother, and refused to let go despite being stabbed numerous times by an unknown subject.
Officers reported to the scene on the 3800 block of Cottage Avenue to find Collins and his mother with significant burns. In September of 2011, Audrey Collins died of complications from her burns.
