On Aug. 30, Baltimore City Circuit Judge Cynthia H. Jones heard the case of a defendant who had been charged in relation to a discharged firearm on Dec. 16, 2022.

The defendant, Shannon Colbert, was scheduled to begin trial on Wednesday after declining the plea offered by the prosecution. After being clarified on the potential sentences he could receive if found guilty on all seven counts, the court took a recess before proceeding to jury selection.

This process soon came to a permanent halt however, as Colbert, 25, decided to plead guilty to possession of a firearm with a felony conviction and having a loaded handgun on his person.

Colbert received ten years for the first count, suspending all but five, without the possibility of probation for the first five years. He then received three years for having a loaded handgun, which is to run concurrent with the first sentence.

According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, on Nov. 25, 2022, Colbert was implicated in suspicious gun related activity on the 1800 block of Bloomingdale Road.

As reported by Baltimore Witness, an unnamed witness pointed his presence out to a Baltimore Police Department officer, stating that he was armed with and brandishing a gun. He was also reported to have been aiming the weapon and firing at a child in the area, concealing his weapon upon being confronted by the officer at the scene.

Colbert was charged with firearm possession with a felony conviction, illegal possession of a registered firearm, carrying a loaded handgun on his person, carrying a handgun on his person, discharging a firearm, possessing a detachable magazine over ten rounds, and the illegal possession of ammunition.
