Attempted Murder Suspect Walks After Prosecution Unable to Contact Victim

The case of an argument over house cleaning turned attempted murder between roommates was dismissed on July 13 after the prosecution was unable to contact the victim or witnesses for over a week.

Steve Wilson, 27, was facing charges of attempted first and second-degree murder in addition to assault, reckless endangerment, and four weapons charges.

Defense attorney Augustine Okeke told Baltimore Witness on Wednesday that the case against Wilson, who was scheduled to begin a jury selection, was nolle prossed, or dismissed.

However, Wilson will return to Baltimore City Circuit Court on Aug. 4 for violating his probation from a 2019 conviction for firearm possession with a felony conviction, the Maryland Judiciary website states. Wilson was also charged and convicted of drug possession with the intent to distribute in 2003.

The defendant was previously offered a plea in February of 30 years in prison for attempted first-degree murder and a concurrent 25 years, the first five years without parole, for use of a firearm during a violent crime, which he rejected.

According to charging documents, the incident in question occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2021, along the 1500 block of Appleton Street, where the male victim began arguing with Wilson about cleaning the house and leaving behind dirty dishes. The victim’s girlfriend told officers with the Baltimore Police Department that she kept the two men from physically fighting each other and told the victim to “go outside to cool off.”

As the victim stood at the bottom of the front stoop, a cellphone in one hand and aluminum baseball bat in the other, Wilson slapped the cell phone out of the victim’s hand, she told police. The victim’s girlfriend, once again, got between the two men at which time Wilson then pulled a black handgun out of the front pocket of his vest and fired at the victim four to five times .

The victim was shot in the lower abdomen and right thigh and taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in critical but stable condition.

Police later reported that Wilson turned himself in two days after the shooting.
