Man Accused of Stairwell Homicide Scheduled for Trial in September

A 38-year-old Baltimore man rejected a plea on June 28, leaving Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn to schedule his trial in September.

Steven Melton is charged with first-degree murder charge, use of a firearm during a violent crime and possession of a firearm with a felony conviction for allegedly shooting 24-year-old Dominik Carr in his own apartment stairwell on the 2800 block of Edgecombe Circle on April 5, 2021.

The prosecutor presented a plea of life suspending all but 50 years for first-degree murder and 10 years for the use of a firearm during a violent crime. The charges are set to run concurrently.

Melton and his defense attorney, Michael Cooper, rejected the plea.

CBS Baltimore previously reported that Melton was seen on camera entering Carr’s apartment complex before his murder. Melton spent close to an hour and a half in the complex before leaving the building, where police later found Carr’s body.

Melton allegedly pulled a gun on Carr in an argument less than a month before the shooting occurred, said police.

Melton’s trial is scheduled for Sept. 26.
