Defendant Pleads in BB Gun Homicide

Taiwan Mitchell, 42 pled guilty on Oct. 23 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy for his involvement in the Nov. 13, 2021 death of Roy Henry Cantler III, who was shot through the eye with a BB gun on the 2200 block of Christian Street. Cantler later succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital. A second victim suffered a gunshot wound to the arm.

Mitchell was originally sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in 2024 but the decision was overturned by the Appellate Court of Maryland and sent back to the circuit court stating that “the circuit court failed to comply with” a state law regarding a criminal defendant’s request to discharge counsel.

Mitchell pled guilty to an involuntary manslaughter and was subsequently  sentenced to 10 years imprisonment suspending all but seven years. Additionally he was put on three years of supervised probation.
