A man was shot and his mother and girlfriend assaulted earlier this year by their neighbor, defendant Derrick Davis Jr., who will face multiple attempted murder charges during a two-day trial scheduled for late November.
Davis, 42, is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and using a firearm in the commission of a felony or violent crime in addition to five weapons violations and reckless endangerment for the incident on April 2. The defendant appeared in reception court before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland on Sept. 28 alongside his defense attorney, Koryn High.
The trial prosecutor offered Davis a plea of life, suspending all but 50 years, the first five years without parole, for attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and weapons violations. High rejected the offer on her client’s behalf, saying that she and Davis are still reviewing discovery.
Judge Copeland and counsel agreed on a two-day trial, beginning Nov. 30, before Judge Jeffrey M. Geller.
Davis is alleged to have shot the 30-year-old male victim after the victim reported the defendant was being disrespectful toward his 35-year-old girlfriend. According to court documents, the male victim’s mother, 51, told Baltimore Police that her son and the defendant were arguing outside their homes on the 2000 block of E. Hoffman Street before the shooting. The male victim went inside to tell his mother about the neighbor’s behavior before returning outside.
Moments later, the victim’s mother told police she heard approximately four gunshots and ran outside where she found her son suffering from gunshot wounds. She also reported seeing her neighbor holding a silver revolver.
Court documents state that the male victim was shot twice in the back and suffered trauma to his chest.
After the shooting, the mother told police, her neighbor pushed her to the ground onto her son and his girlfriend and attempted to fire the revolver again, which appeared to malfunction. Davis then allegedly went back into his home with the revolver in hand.
Davis was said to assault the mother by throwing a glass bottle at her, while her son’s girlfriend had a graze wound on the left side of her face. Court documents state that witnesses reportedly saw Davis leaving his residence from the back of his home before police arrived.
The defendant was later allegedly identified through a photo array.
