The prosecutor said the defendant acted with “intent to kill” in opening statements in the double murder trial of Khaleb Edmonds, 26. The Sept. 16 proceeding is being argued before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Alan C. Lazerow.
Edmonds is facing two counts of first-degree murder and three firearm charges in connection to the shooting that took the lives of 26-year-olds Myron White and Darius Hill on Aug. 24, 2023. The defendant faced two previous trials in June of 2025 and May of this year however both resulted in a hung jury.
Charging documents state that police responded to a ShotSpotter alert on the 2200 block of W. North Avenue, where they found the first victim dead from a gunshot wound to his head in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. The second victim was found lying on the ground on the 1800 block of N. Smallwood Street suffering from a mortal wound to the torso.
According to charging documents, 13 9mm cartridge casings along with other evidence were recovered from the scene, and surveillance footage allegedly captured Edmonds’ movements leading up to the shooting. He was positively identified as a person said to be the suspect from the footage.
During opening statements, the state prosecutor said the defendant opened fire at the driver, White, while standing on the side of the road. The prosecutor argued that Edmonds “emptied his gun” with intent to kill White, and had confidence that it would be clear that the defendant took the lives of the two men.
Defense attorney Staci Pipkin reminded the jurors there were plenty of reasons to doubt the prosecution’s case.
She challenged the evidence, including surveillance footage allegedly showing Edmonds during the day when the incident occurred after midnight. Pipkin stated that Edmonds is primarily a suspect because the clothes he wore during the day as captured on video, which was a white t-shirt and black shorts, were the same as the individual on footage during the incident.
The defense argued that there is a “huge gap” that cannot account for the 26 minutes prior to the shooting.
The trial is set to continue throughout the week with further testimonies.
