A split verdict was reached Sept. 9 during a bench trial for a non-fatal shooting before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Robert K. Taylor.
Judge Taylor found Brandon Newman, 26, not guilty of first-and-second-degree assault, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, having a handgun on his person, reckless endangerment, and discharging a firearm. However, Newman was found guilty of handgun possession in a vehicle for his involvement in a non-fatal shooting on March 12 on the 2200 block of Monticello Road.
During the incident, Newman was allegedly in his vehicle and shot at his father, who was on foot, after a disagreement. His father led Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers to the 4500 block of Fairfax Road, the spot where he stood during the shooting. One 9mm shell casing was found at the location.
Newman claimed that he tripped and the firearm discharged as a result. The victim was not struck and did not suffer any injuries.
Judge Taylor sentenced Newman to three years in prison, suspending the entire sentence, with two years of supervised probation. He was also ordered to register as a gun offender.
No further trial dates are scheduled.
