A 26-year-old man accused of shooting at his father over an argument about what time the son would get his driver’s license had his jury trial pushed back on Sept. 8 to the next day–that to accommodate the prosecution and a witness’ availability.
Brandon Newman appeared alongside his defense counsel, Martin Cohen, with the expectation of proceeding to jury selection. The defendant is currently charged with first- and second-degree assault, using a firearm in commission of a violent crime, having a handgun on his person and in a vehicle, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm.
During Tuesday’s proceeding, a stand in prosecutor informed Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Robert K. Taylor Jr. that the trial prosecutor was in another non-fatal shooting trial before Judge Althea M. Handy and unavailable. A witness for the prosecution was also unavailable, so Judge Taylor sent the parties to Judge Melissa K. Copeland, who agreed to continue the case before Judge Taylor on Sept. 9.
According to court documents, the shooting stemmed from an argument between Newman and his father, who asked his son to take him to get his driver’s license around 7 p.m. on March 12 on the 2200 block of Monticello Road. The victim told Baltimore Police that his son was sitting in his 2021 Chevy pickup truck and shot at his father who was standing on the 4500 block of Fairfax Road.
The victim, who was not injured in the shooting, accompanied police to the crime scene where one 9mm shell casing was found. Newman’s father also identified his son as the shooter in a photograph.
A short time later, police found the pickup truck unoccupied on the unit block of Woodstream Court in Owings Mills, court documents state. The defendant approached the police and was arrested while waiting for a tow truck.
Newman allegedly informed police that he disposed of the gun in a wooded area across from the Millstream Inn adult entertainment club on the 5300 block of Dogwood Road in Woodlawn, which was recovered and identified as a 9mm Glock handgun.
