On Aug 12, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Catherine Chen sentenced 53- year-old Deshaen Depaul Carroll to life, suspending all but 50 years following a jury conviction on June 1 stemming from a July 13, 2025 double shooting in East Baltimore.
Carrol was found guilty by a jury of two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of use of a firearm in a felony violent crime, reckless endangerment, handgun on a person, possession of a firearm following a disqualifying conviction, possession of a firearm in connection to a controlled dangerous substance, illegal possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm within Baltimore City.
Carroll shot two men and left them bleeding on the 2000 block of Kennedy Avenue and Robb Street. He is also accused of opening fire at a group of bystanders who fled the scene following the initial shooting.
Carroll represented himself throughout the proceedings after dismissing his public defender. He urged jurors to carefully scrutinize the evidence and reminded them that he was not an attorney.
“I ain’t no attorney, I’m just working with what I got,” he told jurors.
When asked if he had anything to say, the defendant asked Judge Chen to consider his age as a factor given the term is a virtual life sentence.
Nonetheless, Judge Chen sentenced Carrol to 50 years for two counts of attempted first-degree murder, 20 years for two counts of use of a firearm in a felony violent crime, 5 years for reckless endangerment and one year for discharging a firearm within Baltimore City. All of which would run concurrent to the two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
