A jury trial for a Baltimore man charged in the fatal shooting of a woman was postponed July 22 in Baltimore City Circuit Court due to a juror shortage. Jury selection is expected to continue until the panel is seated. Tamal Johnson, 23, was scheduled to appear before Judge Robert Taylor alongside defense attorney George Harris.
Johnson is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, firearm use during a crime of violence, wearing, carrying or transporting a handgun, and firearm possession by a prohibited person in connection with the May 11, 2025 killing of Taniya Gray.
According to charging documents, Gray was preparing to leave for a Mother’s Day trip when Johnson exited a Kia Sorento and shot her multiple times as she entered her vehicle on the 4100 block of Mountwood Road. Surveillance footage, cellphone records and license plate reader data allegedly linked Johnson to the vehicle used in the shooting. Investigators also recovered a Polymer80 handgun that forensic analysis connected to the homicide, according to court records.
Only 297 of the 1,100 summoned jurors appeared in Baltimore City Circuit Court, contributing to the juror shortage that began July 21 and delaying proceedings throughout the day, with no opening statements presented.
Jury selection is scheduled to resume Wednesday, July 23.
