The murder trial facing Terrill Barfield, 40, and Jarvis Sir Goria Joyner, 35, concluded on July 28 with guilty verdicts on multiple charges related to the Jan. 12, 2024, fatal shooting of Deon Beasley outside of a barbershop on 800 block of Washington Boulevard. The case was heard before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy.
During closing arguments, prosecutors acknowledged that neither Barfield nor Jarvis Joyner fired the shots that killed Deon Beasley but argued both played key roles—as Barfield acted as the getaway driver and Joyner the lookout.
The defense countered that the state failed to prove either man handled a firearm or knowingly participated, citing missing DNA evidence, unclear seating locations during a vehicle chase, gaps in surveillance footage, and investigative errors, including the loss of Joyner’s cellphone and failure to collect other electronic devices.
Barfield, represented by Anne Bohen Stewart-Hill, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, having a loaded handgun in a vehicle, and conspiracy to use a firearm in a felony or violent crime.
The court granted a motion for judgment of acquittal on the charge of firearm possession with a felony conviction, and he was acquitted of conspiracy to have a loaded handgun on his person, conspiracy to have a loaded handgun in a vehicle, and reckless endangerment.
Joyner, represented by Jerry Rodriguez, was similarly found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, conspiracy to use a firearm in a felony or violent crime, and conspiracy to have a loaded handgun in a vehicle. He also received a judgment of acquittal on the charge of firearm possession with a felony conviction and was acquitted of having a loaded handgun on his person, conspiracy to have a loaded handgun on his person, and reckless endangerment.
Sentencing for both defendants is scheduled for Nov. 2, before Judge Handy.
