Jury Selection Underway in Belair Road Shooting Trial

Jury selection in the attempted murder trial of Davontaye Watkins began Monday on July 20 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey M. Geller.

Watkins, 29, is charged with attempted murder and various firearm charges in connection to a May 10, 2025 shooting on Belair Road. He is represented by defense attorney Natalie Finegar.

According to charging documents, officers responded to a report of gunfire on the 4300 block of Belair Road and found a man suffering from wounds to his legs. Surveillance footage showed the suspect shoot the victim before fleeing on foot, with witnesses later identifying Watkins as the shooter.

Prior to jury selection, Watkins requested a postponement to seek private counsel. Judge Geller denied the request, noting that the trial had already been postponed twice and citing no good cause for a delay on the day of trial.

Opening statements are scheduled for July 21.
