A Baltimore woman accused of shooting at her daughter during an argument was denied bail on Nov. 7 by Baltimore City Circuit Judge Martin H. Schreiber II.
On June 22, Cassandra Chambers, 42, was arrested in connection to an alleged shooting that occurred in her home on the 3300 block of Virginia Avenue.
The victim, Chambers’ daughter, alleged Chambers shot at her after an argument that broke out over a conversation the daughter overheard between Chambers and Chambers’ son’s father. According to charging documents, the bullet missed Chambers’ daughter and hit the wall approximately five feet away.
A physical altercation then broke out between the victim and Chambers. Shortly after, police arrived on scene. A hole in the wall convinced detectives that Chambers had missed while attempting to shoot at the victim, and she was detained on scene. The victim was treated for her injuries –- a busted lip and bruised hand — before medics left the scene.
At her bail review hearing, Chambers’ attorney, Catherine Tarantino, asked for release on her own recognizance while the prosecutor asked for no bail. The defense stated that Chambers would be living with a relative and taking care of her two-year-old son if she were to be released.
Judge Schreiber denied bail and requested that Chambers be incarcerated until trial as necessary to keep the community safe.
After Judge Schreiber announced his decision, Chambers tried to argue for herself, despite her attorney’s pleas to remain silent. Chambers sounded distraught as she denied her alleged crimes, insisting she was justified in her actions and that her attorney failed to provide fair representation.
Despite her pleas, Judge Schreiber remained firm in his decision and moved onto the next case.
Though Chambers’ trial is set for Nov. 10 before Judge Jeffrey M. Geller, it may potentially be moved to a different date if the state submits a request for postponement.
