Opening Arguments Presented in Medford Road Double Shooting Case

Parties made their opening arguments in the attempted murder trial of 22-year-old Baltimore native Derrien Gamble on Oct. 15.

Gamble is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and related conspiracy and gun violations in connection to a shooting that occurred Feb. 4, 2023 on the 1500 block of Medford Road. The shooting left two victims, a mother and son who were respectively 60 and 17 years old at the time, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds..

The prosecution opened by noting Gamble and two other individuals approached the mother and her son before allegedly opening fire 40 times. Gamble was 19 at the time.

According to prosecutors, area surveillance cameras captured the entire shooting, including “the approach, the parking, and the act of charging and shooting.”

Defense attorney James Sweeting III urged jurors to pay close attention to the evidence and carefully consider who is actually responsible. Sweeting refrained from discussing case specifics during his opening statement, instead emphasizing the importance of examining the facts presented in court rather than making assumptions.

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Bridget Schiffer presided over the trial, which is expected to continue through the week with witness testimony.
