Ellamont Garland, 46, pleaded guilty on Sept. 23 to two separate gun charges in connection to a self-inflicted shooting that occurred in April.
Garland pleaded guilty before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer to firearm possession with a felony conviction and having a handgun on his person. In exchange for his plea, Garland will serve 15 years for the possession charge, suspending all but 112 days, and take part in the Maryland Gun Offender Registry. He also received a concurrent five-year suspended sentence for having a handgun on his person, as well as three years of supervised probation.
Charging documents state that on Apr. 18, Western District patrol responded to a reported shooting on the 600 block of N. Calhoun Street, where they found Garland with one self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left hand and another to his upper left leg.
Garland informed officers that he shot himself after attempting to disarm a firearm that he found in Edmondson Village. Garland claimed he transported the firearm from Edmondson Village to his residence on the 600 block of N. Calhoun Street, where the incident occurred.
Garland was prohibited from owning or operating a firearm at the time of the incident due to a second-degree rape conviction he received in 2002.
