Isaiah Eckels‘ confinement without bail was prolonged in a hearing on Aug. 22.
Eckels, 20, is accused of several firearms charges in connection with an incident on May 17, in which he allegedly fired a handgun three times upward into the air while others were in the vicinity.
Eckels’ defense attorney, Kurt E. Nachtman, requested that the court impose home detention as an alternative to incarceration.
Nachtman emphasized that Eckels was not specifically identified in the finding of probable cause. He also noted that while Eckels was identified by a witness, he was not observed in surveillance footage. Eckels also has no prior criminal record.
The prosecution requested that the court continue to hold Eckels without bail, because they say he demonstrated a complete disregard for public safety in firing a gun in a public space.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge LaZette Ringgold-Kirksey, expressing concern for community safety, ruled that Eckels will remain jailed without bail.
Eckels’ trial is set to begin on Aug. 28.
