My summer at Baltimore Witness was very insightful, interesting, and fun. I faced a variety of cases and issues that not only taught me a lot about the legal process, but also about a different writing style and developing important technical skills.

Adjusting my writing style to a journalistic platform was difficult at first, but very beneficial. I am better able to convey details in a clear and concise way now. I am also better able to discern what details of a trial would be more relevant to the public, versus things that people might not care to read through, such as complicated legal jargon.

I also learned how to work with data and contribute to databases this summer. This was something I had little experience with starting out, and definitely the area where I learned the most. These skills were very important and helpful to develop no matter what field I end up going into, simply because of the reality of the increasingly technical world we live in. I feel better prepared now for wherever I end up going because of the skills I learned from working with data this summer.

Overall, I have learned so much about legal procedure and just the building blocks of a case. From motions to objections, charges to incarceration, investigation to verdict, I have learned something new in virtually every area of legal procedure, and I’ve even unlearned a lot of things that I thought to be true from the media. As someone who is planning to go to law school, those lessons have meant the most to me.

Lastly, I have made new connections and acquaintances here that have really enriched my experience and made it more fun. I have really valued my time at Baltimore Witness and am so grateful for it!
