Takeya Miller, 49, was sentenced to probation before judgment before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Martin H Schreiber on July 7.
Miller is charged with first-degree assault and various firearm violations in connection to a shooting that occurred Oct. 6, 2024, on the 7600 block of Harford Road. She was sentenced on the charges of first-degree assault and discharging a firearm.
The incident occurred in a shopping center parking lot after a verbal argument at a birthday party moved outside and turned physical. A firearm was discharged, grazing the victim on her arm.
Defense attorney Michael Tomko highlighted Miller’s background as an outstanding citizen, noting she runs a home healthcare business that allows hospice patients to live out the remainder of their lives in their residences. He also mentioned that Miller has no prior criminal record and purchased her firearm legally.
Miller reportedly purchased the firearm after the murder of her son in 2023, which remains unsolved. Tomko mentioned Miller began carrying the firearm more frequently after the incident, as she felt she was in danger.
Miller grew emotional at the mention of her son’s death. She told Judge Schreiber that the discharge “was not supposed to happen,” and described herself as a business woman who works hard to support her family.
No further hearings are scheduled in this case at the time.
