A jury reached a verdict on July 18 for a 32-year-old murder defendant in Baltimore City Circuit Court.
Kyle Cooper was charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, having a handgun in a vehicle, having a handgun on his person and firearm possession with a felony conviction for the murder of 66-year-old Eric Gill on Aug. 31, 2023.
Brandon Taylor, Cooper’s attorney, claimed Cooper acted in self-defense when he killed Gill and shot another man because Gill and an accomplice were allegedly attempting to steal Cooper’s car on the 6100 block of Edlynne Road and Cooper felt threatened for his life.
Cooper was found not guilty of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, attempted second-degree murder and attempted voluntary manslaughter. However, Cooper was found guilty of two counts of firearm use in a felony violent crime, first-degree assault, having a handgun in a vehicle, having a handgun on his person and firearm possession with a felony conviction.
Cooper’s sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
