On July 28, attempted homicide defendant Herschel Cooper pleaded guilty to assault before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Philip S. Jackson

Cooper, 62, was charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, using a firearm during a violent crime, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, having a handgun on his person, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of ammo and discharging a firearm in connection to an incident on Aug. 17, 2021.

Cooper received a sentence of 25 years suspending all but 10 years with 3 years of probation for first-degree assault, and 5 years without parole for using a firearm during a violent crime. The sentence terms are set to run concurrently.

Under the plea agreement, Cooper is restricted from visiting the victim and the family plus he must register as a gun offender.

Cooper was represented by defense attorney Roland Harris.

According to court documents, on August 17, 2021, officers responded to a shooting that occurred on the 500 Block of North Calhoun Street, where a 51-year-old male was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his back.

During their investigation, detectives discovered that Cooper and the victim were involved in a dispute during the incident.
