A 21-year-old man will serve five years in prison without the possibility of parole for shooting a woman in a domestic incident in October 2023.
On May 15, Baltimore resident Dontr’e Carmichael accepted the prosecution’s plea offer of seven years, suspending all but five years without parole, and two years of supervised probation for firearm use in a crime of violence in connection to a shooting on Oct. 13, 2023.
Carmichael was represented by defense attorneys Paul Krause and Paul Kramer before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry G. Williams.
Judge Williams agreed to the Alford plea, which allows the defendant to plead guilty while maintaining his innocence. Under the terms of the plea, Carmichael must also have no contact with the victim, stay away from the victim’s current and future properties, register as a gun offender and complete domestic abuse treatment through Baltimore’s House of Ruth program.
The prosecutor said he would be willing to modify the sentence once Carmichael successfully completes his probation. All remaining counts were dismissed.
According to the prosecution, Carmichael and the victim were having an argument inside a home on the 1100 block of South Carey Street. The victim told Baltimore Police that the defendant then got a gun from a dresser and shot her once in the abdomen.
Krause informed the court that Carmichael still says the shooting was accidental.
