21-Year-Old Attempted Murder Defendant to Start Trial in August

A attempted murder defendant facing two cases in Baltimore City Circuit Court was assigned a new trial date on Feb. 28.

Defense attorney Augustine Okeke appeared before Judge Melissa M. Phinn on Tuesday on behalf of defendant Dashawn Raynard Carter.

In regards to an incident that occurred on Feb. 16, 2022, Carter is charged with attempted first and second- degree murder, first-degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony violent crime, possessing a firearm with a felony conviction, possession of a firearm with a drug conviction, having a loaded handgun on his person, reckless endangerment, and discharging firearms.

Carter is also facing additional firearm and drug charges in a separate incident that occurred on Feb. 24, 2022.

The assistant state’s attorney present during the hearing said they intend to try the two cases at the same time. She said the plea had been previously rejected, so it was withdrawn.

Judge Phinn set the 21-year-old defendant to start trial on Aug. 2 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Ausby. The trial is expected to last five days.
