Javon Hines, 24, appeared in reception court before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland on July 25 to receive his trial date for an attempted murder case from 2022.
On Oct. 21, 2022, officers responded to the 3300 block of Bayonne Avenue, and upon arrival, observed a young man lying in the street and suffering from several gunshot wounds to his upper body. While the victim did not provide officers with information on who might have been responsible for his injuries, witnesses advised they observed a dark-skinned man in a sedan with tinted windows leaving the scene. According to charging documents, one witness advised they saw a man named “Black” shoot the victim. “Black” was later identified as a person said to be Hines.
Less than a month after the shooting, Hines was arrested for a different matter and found in possession of a handgun that ballistics contend was the weapon used in the Bayonne Avenue shooting.
During the hearing, Hines and defense attorney Robert Cohen rejected the prosecution’s plea offer of 60 years, suspending all but 30, followed by five years of supervised probation for the attempted murder and a concurrent five years without parole for firearm use in a felony crime of violence.
The trial is slated to begin on Nov. 11, with information on a judge to be confirmed pending court scheduling.
