20-Year-Old Man Pleads Guilty to Homicide, Armed Carjackings and Robberies in 2022

A 20-year-old Baltimore man charged with the murder of Deontay Edwards, attempted murder and a series of armed carjackings and robberies in July 2022 has pleaded guilty to several of the related charges with a sentencing currently scheduled for November.

Tyshaun Williams appeared in Baltimore City Circuit Court’s reception court on Sept. 16 when Judge Melissa K. Copeland sent the defendant’s case to Judge Alan C. Lazerow to proceed with a plea agreement. Out of the 66 charges, Williams, who was represented by defense attorney Judit Otvos, agreed to plead guilty to common law misdemeanor, first-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony or violent crime and armed robbery as well as two counts of armed carjacking.

A sentencing is scheduled on Nov. 15.

According to a press release from the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, Williams was indicted for Edwards’ murder as well as the attempted murder of three other people that occurred on July 30, 2022. Williams’ other charges stemmed from incidents beginning as early as July 12, 2022, until his arrest on Aug. 2, 2022.

The release states that Edwards and the other victims were standing in the street on the corner of Rutland and East Lafayette avenues where the defendant and another suspect shot at them from a vehicle. The victims attempted to drive away on Rutland Avenue, but were followed and shot at by the suspects, causing the victims’ vehicle to crash near the intersection of Oliver Street.

Edwards was fatally shot in his back while attempting to run away, while another victim survived three gunshot wounds. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office reported that Williams and the other suspect were driving a vehicle that they allegedly carjacked from a woman at gunpoint about a week earlier on the 5300 block of Nelson Avenue. The defendant was later connected to an armed carjacking on July 12, 2022, on the 3200 block of Independence Street and an armed robbery on July 25, 2022, near the 2300 block of Sinclair Lane.
