The Dec. 8 bail review docket saw Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Y. Ausby preside over the case of an 18-year-old defendant charged with discharging a firearm in Baltimore City.

Calvin Sanders, 18, is charged with possession of a firearm as a minor, having a loaded handgun on his person, having a handgun on his person and firing and discharging a gun in connection to an incident that occurred on Oct. 13.

According to the prosecution, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers responded to Chandler Avenue on Oct. 13 after Sanders’ foster mother reported hearing three shots fired in the area. When police arrived, they saw Sanders absconding.

After detaining him, they allegedly found he had a loaded gun that matched the three shell casings found in the area. Sanders reportedly was “angry and upset” prior to the shots fired. He was later arrested and held in detention.

In Friday’s bail review, the defense explained Sanders,18, had no prior record. The defense also pointed out that he had been staying with this foster family for the past three years and had a job in Anne Arundel county as a garbage collector. According to the defense, Sanders suffers from a heart murmur, which required surgery last year and needs ongoing treatment.

The prosecution stated that the fact that Sanders not only fired a gun in anger, but did so in a busy area, making the charge extremely serious and that Sanders should be jailed in the interest of public safety.

An agent from Pretrial Services said that home detention would be suitable, as Sanders’ mother lives in Hanover, Pa. Since this was Sanders’ first offense, the agent determined he was a low flight risk.

Afterwards, Judge Ausby ordered Sanders to home detention with his mother with no exceptions.

“You fired a firearm, and that’s very serious to the court,” Judge Ausby said to the defendant.
