The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) announced the death of E’vaa Sewell, a 10-year-old girl, on Jan. 28.
Investigators believe Sewell accidentally shot herself in the head at her grandmother’s home in the 3500 block of Ingleside Avenue. On Jan. 25, BPD officers responded to the Pimlico neighborhood residence where they located the Sewell in the bedroom surrounded by blood. Her grandmother, 51-year-old Alethea Mitchell, said she found a gun under Sewell’s body.
According to a previous report by WBAL-TV, Mitchell decided to hide the gun before alerting the police at approximately 3:16 p.m. Sewell was rushed to the Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment. Investigators later found that the gun was stolen from North Carolina in November 2017 and that Mitchell, who has prior burglary and drug convictions, is legally not allowed to own a gun.
Mitchell appeared before a judge on Monday and was denied bail. Due to the nature of the crime, homicide detectives are investigating.
